Chelsea hold off Brighton fightback to win seven-goal thriller
Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League matchday two clash that swung wildly before Xabi Alonso's side held on. The result lifted Chelsea to third in the table, while Brighton, managed by Fabian Hurzeler, remain eighth despite the late scare they gave their hosts.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Chelsea tore into their visitors from the start, with Roméo Lavia opening the scoring inside four minutes before Pedro Neto, set up by Morgan Rogers, doubled the lead on 14 minutes. João Pedro added a third in the 32nd minute, assisted by Jorrel Hato, but Malick Yalcouyé pulled one back three minutes later to leave the score 3-1 at the break.
The second half brought further twists. João Pedro turned the ball into his own net in the 63rd minute to make it 3-2, before Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's two-goal cushion in the 74th, teed up by João Pedro himself. Pascal Groß struck deep into stoppage time, in the sixth added minute, but Brighton could find no further equaliser and Chelsea saw out the win.
Chelsea dominated territory with 74 percent of possession and produced 2.97 expected goals to Brighton's 1.47, reflecting the control they exerted despite conceding three times. Brighton were also the more heavily penalised side, picking up three yellow cards and 12 fouls compared to Chelsea's one card and six fouls.
Pedro Neto scored Chelsea's second goal and earned an 8.5 rating, one of three home players to stand out alongside goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and provider Morgan Rogers.
Chelsea's 74 percent possession share underlined how thoroughly they controlled the ball against Brighton.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Chelsea 36%, the draw 32%, Brighton 32%. It finished Chelsea 4–3 Brighton.
Level sides, home ground holds off Brighton's control of the ball — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Chelsea's 36% is home ground and little else. The draw at 32% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Chelsea in front?
Home ground, and little else. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1937 to 1982. Sides this close won 43.2% of 15,844 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.1%).
Why only 36%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Brighton hold 11 more possession points (64 to 53 in recent games) — and between equals, control has been worth something. Between evenly-matched sides, when the visitors held this control edge the home team's win rate fell to 40.2% across 5,558 games, from 44.0% when styles were level. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Chelsea's column. Across 10,823 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, level with the Brighton win?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 2.6 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,699. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.4 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 6 between them: Chelsea 2 wins, 0 draws, Brighton 4 wins. Most recently Brighton 3–0 Chelsea, 4 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 28.1% of 5601 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points. Brighton have played 3+ games in the last two weeks; their opponents haven't. Between equals, congested home sides won 47.0% of 2423 measured games and congested visitors 28.2% of 2472 — the cells disagree with each other and with the flat rest table, so schedule stays a watch item at 0 points.
