Saka strike gives Arsenal win over Aston Villa at Villa Park
Arsenal moved to the top of the early Premier League table with a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park, a result that continued Unai Emery's side's difficult start to the season. The visitors settled the contest with a single goal in the second half, doing enough to leave with all three points from the matchday two fixture.

The first half finished goalless, with neither side able to break the deadlock, though Arsenal's control of possession hinted at the direction the game would take. The breakthrough arrived in the 59th minute when Bukayo Saka converted after being set up by Riccardo Calafiori, putting the away side 1-0 ahead and forcing Villa to chase the game for the remainder of the match.
Villa were unable to find a way back despite pushing forward, and the scoreline held at 1-0 through to the final whistle. Arsenal's dominance was reflected across the pitch, with Mikel Arteta's side controlling the ball for 61 per cent of the match and creating the better openings throughout, while Villa struggled to register a shot on target.
Calafiori's assist for Saka's decisive goal underpinned a rating of 7.9, the highest of any player on the pitch, while Saka himself justified his own strong performance by scoring the only goal of the match.
Arsenal's 1.05 expected goals figure against Villa's 0.31 underlined how much more clinical territory the visitors occupied throughout the match.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Aston Villa 21%, the draw 25%, Arsenal 54%. It finished Aston Villa 0–1 Arsenal.
Arsenal's rating gap outweighs Aston Villa's home ground — Arsenal are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top gives Arsenal the lean. The draw at 25% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Arsenal at 54%?
Arsenal sit 264 points higher on our strength rating — 1950 to 2213. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge on the road won 51.9% of 6,058 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Aston Villa's column. Across 10,864 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 23–21–56.
Why only 54%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 54% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 25% and Aston Villa at 21%.
Why the draw at 25%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 22.0%. These teams' recent games average 2.6 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,716. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.1 points to the draw.
