Malen hat-trick powers Roma to 4-0 rout of Fiorentina
AS Roma opened their Serie A campaign with a 4-0 demolition of Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico, a result that lifted them to the top of the table after matchday one. Donyell Malen was at the heart of everything, scoring three times, while Niccolò Pisilli added a late fourth to complete the rout in front of referee Matteo Marcenaro.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Malen broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, converting a Paulo Dybala assist to give Roma a 1-0 lead at half-time. He struck again three minutes into the second half to double the advantage, then completed his hat-trick in the 60th minute, once more teed up by Dybala, to make it 3-0. Pisilli rounded off the scoring in the 86th minute for the fourth.
Roma dominated throughout, holding 61 percent of possession and firing 16 shots to Fiorentina's eight, with eight of those on target compared to four for the visitors. The home side's xG of 2.72 against Fiorentina's 0.25 underlined the gulf in quality chances created across the match.
Donyell Malen scored all three of Roma's first-half-and-beyond goals, earning a perfect 10.0 rating in a man-of-the-match display, with Paulo Dybala supplying the assist for each of his strikes.
Roma's 61 percent share of possession reflected their complete control of the contest from start to finish.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave AS Roma 55%, the draw 28%, Fiorentina 17%. It finished AS Roma 4–0 Fiorentina.
AS Roma's rating edge, but the draw is in play — AS Roma are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their control of the ball on top gives AS Roma a clear lead. The draw at 28% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why AS Roma at 55%?
AS Roma sit 147 points higher on our strength rating — 1951 to 1804. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge at home won 57.1% of 12,740 such games. AS Roma hold 11 more possession points (57 to 46 in recent games) across a 147-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 75–150-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,620 such games where the class table expected 41.3%. The 300 most similar past games finished 59–26–15.
Why only 55%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims AS Roma's column. Across 10,727 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. Serie A home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (25.9% vs 24.9% norm). Serie A homes won 43.3% of 6,089 games vs 44.9% across all 99,343 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Fiorentina win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.8 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,864. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The control factor adds 1.2 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
AS Roma scored +0.51 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Measured across 2,793 games at this rating gap, hot-finishing sides won 42.1% vs 42.9% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it scores 0 until the receipt clears its evidence bar. AS Roma are unbeaten in their last 12 league games at home. Rolling home runs look imposing but sides on a 6+ run won 56.3% of 13,532 games vs 54.5% class-expected — and in our walked test the rating already carried it. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
