Match report
Lautaro Martínez's late double sinks Napoli as Inter fight back from two down
Inter came from two goals behind to beat Napoli 3-2 in Serie A's third round, with Lautaro Martínez scoring twice, including a stoppage-time winner. Napoli had led through Matteo Politano and Rasmus Højlund early in the second half, but Chivu's side responded to complete a dramatic turnaround at the death.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
The visitors struck twice in quick succession after the break. Politano put Napoli ahead in the 50th minute, and three minutes later Højlund doubled the lead, finishing off a Giovanni Di Lorenzo assist. Inter's response was almost immediate as Lautaro Martínez pulled one back in the 56th minute, converting a Federico Dimarco assist to make it 2-1.
Inter dominated territory and chances throughout, and that pressure eventually told. Marcus Thuram levelled in the 82nd minute, teed up by Carlos Augusto, before Lautaro Martínez struck again deep into stoppage time, in the first minute of added time, finishing an Manuel Akanji assist to complete the comeback and seal a 3-2 victory.
The result kept Inter top of the table on nine points from three games, while Napoli remain tenth with three points after a fourth-round defeat that overturned an encouraging start under M. Allegri.
Lautaro Martínez scored twice, including the decisive stoppage-time goal, and finished with a rating of 9.16, the highest of any player on the pitch.
Inter dominated possession with 63% of the ball, underlining their control of the contest even as they trailed for much of the second half.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Inter 64%, the draw 22%, Napoli 14%. It finished Inter 3–2 Napoli.
Inter's rating gap decides it — Inter are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of Inter's 64%. The draw at 22% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Inter at 64%?
Inter sit 203 points higher on our strength rating — 2147 to 1944. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge at home won 67.0% of 5,974 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 64–19–17.
Why only 64%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Inter's column. Across 10,911 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. Serie A home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to the other outcomes. Serie A homes won 43.3% of 6,102 games vs 44.9% across all 99,727 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why is the draw only 22%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 19.6%. These teams' recent games average 2.8 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,965. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. Serie A runs draw-heavy, adding 1.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
Inter scored +0.95 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Measured across 2,827 games at this rating gap, hot-finishing sides won 42.1% vs 42.9% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it scores 0 until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Inter are unbeaten in their last 13 league games at home (10 wins, 3 draws), a run going back to December 2025. Rolling home runs look imposing but sides on a 6+ run won 56.3% of 13,570 games vs 54.6% class-expected — and in our walked test the rating already carried it, as it did for the season-long record. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
