Ten-man Empoli fall to Romagnoli own goal as Arezzo win at Castellani
Empoli lost 0-1 to Arezzo at the Stadio Carlo Castellani in Serie B matchday four, undone by an own goal after being reduced to ten men before half-time. The result left both sides level on six points, with Empoli eighth and Arezzo ninth in the table.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Marco Curto was sent off in first-half stoppage time, leaving Empoli to play the majority of the match a man light. The hosts held out through a goalless first period, but the numerical disadvantage told in the second half as Arezzo pressed for a breakthrough.
The decisive moment came in the 74th minute, when Simone Romagnoli turned the ball into his own net to give Arezzo the lead. Despite the setback of playing with ten men, Empoli finished with more shots on goal than their tally might suggest, but could not find an equaliser as the visitors held on for the win.
Mauro Coppolaro was Arezzo's top-rated performer with an 8.0 rating, helping the visitors control the closing stages after Empoli's red card.
Despite playing over 45 minutes with ten men, Empoli still managed 10 shots to Arezzo's 15, reflecting an even attacking contest.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Empoli 27%, the draw 38%, Arezzo 35%. It finished Empoli 0–1 Arezzo.
Arezzo's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Arezzo are the stronger side on our strength rating, and a weak Serie B home advantage plus the early-season home fade on top give Arezzo the lean. The draw at 38% is the likeliest single result, helped by a draw-heavy league.
Why Arezzo at 35%?
Arezzo sit 193 points higher on our strength rating — 1460 to 1653. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge on the road won 40.1% of 13,161 such games. Serie B home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (32.2% vs 24.9% norm) and away wins (26.1% vs 30.2%). Serie B homes won 41.7% of 4,042 games vs 44.9% across all 100,057 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Empoli's column. Across 11,040 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 28–28–44.
Why only 35%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 35% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 38% and Empoli at 27%.
Why is the draw the likeliest result?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 27.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,793. Serie B runs draw-heavy, adding 7.3 points. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Arezzo are newly promoted — game 4 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen.
