Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave New York City FC 36%, the draw 33%, Los Angeles FC 31%. It finished New York City FC 1–1 Los Angeles FC.
Home advantage edges New York City FC ahead, draw live — Los Angeles FC sit 64 points higher on our strength rating, but New York City FC's home advantage, boosted because home sides in Major League Soccer do better than the global norm, gives them a slight lean at 36%. The draw sits at 33%, up from a usual 29% because both teams' recent games average just 2.3 goals.
Why New York City FC at 36%?
Home ground, against the rating. Los Angeles FC sit 64 points higher on our strength rating — 1537 to 1473. Sides with a 40–80-point rating edge on the road won 32.5% of 10,394 such games. Major League Soccer home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (25.7% vs 30.0%). Major League Soccer homes won 49.2% of 5,237 games vs 44.6% across all 101,264 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why only 36%?
Because Los Angeles FC are the stronger side on our strength rating. Los Angeles FC sit -0.53 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Visitors this cold went on to win 31.6% of 1,375 games, vs 27.9% for visitors finishing normally.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Los Angeles FC win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 29.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.3 goals — a low-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 28.2% of 18,744. The goals environment adds 3.3 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
New York City FC sit -0.32 goals per game under chance-quality. For home sides we could not receipt a bounce-back — the measured cells sit inside each other's noise bands — so this is noted and scores 0. Los Angeles FC are 2 games into a new manager (Xavi Tamarit), appointed 6 days ago. The famous new-manager bounce doesn't survive its receipt: sides with a new manager beat their rating by 0.9 points over 33,420 games — but sides on an equally bad run who kept their manager beat it by 2.4 over 31,777.
