Overview

Seattle Sounders in brief

Seattle Sounders FC were founded on 13 November 2007 and began play in Major League Soccer in 2009. The name was first used by the city's North American Soccer League club of 1974-1983, which lost Soccer Bowl finals to the New York Cosmos in 1977 and 1982, and then by a second-division side from 1994 to 2008. Joe Roth was the original majority owner, succeeded by Adrian Hanauer in 2015. Home is Lumen Field, shared with the NFL's Seahawks and formerly known as Qwest Field and CenturyLink Field.

Seattle won the U.S. Open Cup in their first MLS season and again in 2010, 2011 and 2014, the year they also took the Supporters' Shield. Under Brian Schmetzer, coach from 2016, they beat Toronto FC in the MLS Cup finals of 2016 and 2019, and in 2022 they became the first MLS club to win the CONCACAF Champions League in its 2008-2023 format, beating Pumas UNAM. A 3-0 win over Inter Miami in the 2025 Leagues Cup final made them the first MLS team to win all five trophies open to its clubs.
