Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave FC Dallas 47%, the draw 26%, Seattle Sounders 27%. It finished FC Dallas 1–0 Seattle Sounders.
Strong home edge in Major League Soccer lifts Dallas — With almost nothing between the sides on our strength rating, FC Dallas lead because home sides in Major League Soccer out-perform the global norm, though Seattle Sounders' greater share of the ball pulls slightly the other way. The draw starts near 28% for evenly matched sides and drops to 26%, mainly because both teams' recent games average 3.5 goals.
Why FC Dallas in front?
Home ground, mostly. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1548 to 1515. Sides this close won 45.8% of 13,718 home games (draw 27.6%, visitors 26.6%). Major League Soccer home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (25.7% vs 30.0%). Major League Soccer homes won 49.2% of 5,222 games vs 44.6% across all 101,177 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why only 47%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Seattle Sounders hold 6 more possession points (49 to 43 in recent games) — and between equals, control has been worth something. Between evenly-matched sides, when the visitors held this control edge the home team's win rate fell to 39.8% across 5,477 games, from 44.0% when styles were level. FC Dallas scored +0.34 goals per game beyond chance-quality — home sides this hot gave some of it back. Opponents of hot-finishing home sides won 28.6% of 1,479 games, vs 27.7% against normal finishing.
Why the draw at 26%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 27.6%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 23.2% of 16,905. The goals environment takes 2.4 points off the draw. The control factor adds 1.4 points to the draw.
