Match report
Roma's perfect start rests on more than Malen's goals
AS Roma made it four wins from four in Serie A with a 2-0 victory at Torino, reaching 12 points and finishing the match top of the table. Donyell Malen and Niccolò Pisilli supplied the goals, but the result also showed the defensive discipline behind Roma's start: Torino had more possession without creating the same volume of chances.

Il Romanista's post-match assessment on X singled out Leonardo Balerdi as Roma's best player and again praised the Paulo Dybala–Malen partnership. The attention given to a defender was a useful counterpoint to the goals: Roma spent much of the second half protecting a narrow lead, yet Torino finished with only three shots on target.
Malen struck in the 40th minute, and Roma protected that narrow lead until Pisilli scored in the third minute of stoppage time. Torino had 52 per cent possession but managed only six shots to Roma's 14. Roma also led expected goals by 1.91 to 0.76, evidence that the home side's extra time on the ball did not translate into the greater attacking threat.
Roma's official account celebrated a fourth victory from four league games. Coming after their Champions League draw with Fenerbahçe, this was a return to winning ways with another clean sheet. Torino, meanwhile, could not build on their victory over Fiorentina: the challenge was turning spells of possession into enough chances to recover once Malen had put them behind.
Donyell Malen scored the opening goal and earned the highest match-data rating of 7.9.
Roma won eight corners to Torino's one, another indication of where the more sustained attacking pressure came from.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Torino 20%, the draw 27%, AS Roma 53%. It finished Torino 0–2 AS Roma.
AS Roma's rating gap, but the draw is in play — AS Roma are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade plus a weak Serie A home advantage on top give AS Roma the lean. The draw at 27% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why AS Roma at 53%?
AS Roma sit 238 points higher on our strength rating — 1697 to 1935. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge on the road won 51.9% of 6,090 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Torino's column. Across 11,152 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.6% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. Serie A home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to the other outcomes. Serie A homes won 43.3% of 6,118 games vs 44.9% across all 100,205 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. The 300 most similar past games finished 27–23–50.
Why only 53%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 53% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 27% and Torino at 20%.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Torino win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.0%. These teams' recent games average 2.9 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 25,088. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. Serie A runs draw-heavy, adding 1.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
AS Roma average 7 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 238 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. AS Roma scored +0.37 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Measured across 2,867 games at this rating gap, hot-finishing sides won 42.1% vs 42.9% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it scores 0 until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
