New England Revolution edge Chicago Fire 1-0 despite being outshot
New England Revolution beat Chicago Fire 1-0 at Boston Stadium in Major League Soccer on Matchday 30, taking all three points from a match they spent largely without the ball. The only goal arrived in the 26th minute and it proved enough, with the home side holding on through a second half in which they offered little going forward.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Matthew Polster scored it, converting a chance created by Carles Gil to make it 1-0. That was the last of the scoring. Chicago finished with 19 shots to 5 and won 10 corners to none, but only six of those efforts hit the target, and they never found a way past a home side who defended in numbers after the interval.
The result lifted New England from sixth to third in the table, on 52 points after 30 games. Chicago stayed seventh on 48 points, now four points and four places behind the home side. New England go to Philadelphia Union on Saturday 24 October in Major League Soccer, while Chicago travel to Atlanta United FC on the same day.
Matthew Turner was the highest-rated player on the pitch at 8.29, ahead of team-mates Joshua Wynder and Peyton Miller, as the home defence withstood sustained Chicago pressure.
Chicago had 62% of the possession but could not turn it into a goal, losing to a side that held 38% of the ball.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave New England Revolution 44%, the draw 27%, Chicago Fire 29%. It finished New England Revolution 1–0 Chicago Fire.
Home advantage outweighs Chicago Fire's stronger rating — Chicago Fire sit 72 points higher on our strength rating, but New England Revolution get the usual home advantage, and home sides across Major League Soccer do better than the global norm, so we give New England 44%. The draw starts from 29% for a gap this size and drops to 27% because both teams' recent games average 3.5 goals.
Why New England Revolution at 44%?
Home ground, against the rating. Chicago Fire sit 72 points higher on our strength rating — 1536 to 1464. Sides with a 40–80-point rating edge on the road won 32.5% of 10,394 such games. Major League Soccer home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (25.7% vs 30.0%). Major League Soccer homes won 49.2% of 5,237 games vs 44.6% across all 101,264 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why only 44%?
Because Chicago Fire are the stronger side on our strength rating. The rest is the draw at 27% and Chicago Fire at 29%.
Why the draw at 27%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 29.2%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 23.2% of 16,940. The goals environment takes 2.5 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
New England Revolution are 3 games into a new manager (M. Mićović), appointed 20 days ago. The famous new-manager bounce doesn't survive its receipt: sides with a new manager beat their rating by 0.9 points over 33,420 games — but sides on an equally bad run who kept their manager beat it by 2.4 over 31,777. Out: Mamadou Fofana, a star player, Alhassan Yusuf, an important player, and Jack Harrison, a rotation player. This does not change our forecast yet: we are still measuring how much missing players like these cost a team. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
