Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Sassuolo 29%, the draw 29%, AC Milan 42%. It finished Sassuolo 1–1 AC Milan.
AC Milan's rating edge, but the draw is in play — AC Milan are the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade plus a weak Serie A home advantage on top give AC Milan the lean. The draw at 29% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why AC Milan at 42%?
AC Milan sit 122 points higher on our strength rating — 1645 to 1767. Sides with a 80–160-point rating edge on the road won 39.9% of 13,822 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Sassuolo's column. Across 11,278 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.7%, with draws up 1.4 — negative in every season since 2018. Serie A home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to the other outcomes. Serie A homes won 43.3% of 6,134 games vs 44.6% across all 101,096 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. The 300 most similar past games finished 26–26–48.
Why only 42%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 42% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 29% and Sassuolo at 29%.
Why is the draw second, level with the Sassuolo win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 27.7%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.8% of 25,145. Early-season fixtures add 1.4 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Sassuolo are 7 games into a new manager (Alberto Aquilani), appointed 54 days ago. The famous new-manager bounce doesn't survive its receipt: sides with a new manager beat their rating by 0.9 points over 33,420 games — but sides on an equally bad run who kept their manager beat it by 2.4 over 31,777. Out: Jay Idzes and Ismaël Koné, important players. This does not change our forecast yet: we are still measuring how much missing players like these cost a team. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
