Austria pull away late to beat ten-man Israel in Nations League opener
Austria began their UEFA Nations League League B campaign with a 3-1 victory over Israel, a result that took a late twist after looking tight for most of the evening. Romano Schmid converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Saied Farhi levelled for Israel just after the hour, only to be sent off a minute later, leaving his side to play the remainder with ten men. Austria made the numerical advantage count deep into stoppage time, with Phillipp Mwene restoring the lead from Paul Wanner's assist in the 90th minute before Saša Kalajdzic added a third moments later, set up by Christoph Lang.
The hosts dominated territory and chances throughout, finishing with 19 shots to Israel's 5 and nine on target compared to just one for the visitors. Austria's control of possession, 51 percent to 49, mattered less than their efficiency in front of goal, particularly once Israel were reduced to ten men and forced to defend for the closing stages.
Schmid opened the scoring from the penalty spot and finished with a match-high rating of 7.8, while Kalajdzic and Mwene both also scored in the decisive late spell.
Austria's 19 shots to Israel's 5 underlined how one-sided the contest became, especially after the visitors were reduced to ten men.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Austria 74%, the draw 16%, Israel 10%. It finished Austria 3–1 Israel.
Austria's rating gap decides it — Austria are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of Austria's 74%. The draw at 16% is held down by a high-scoring environment.
Why Austria at 74%?
Austria sit 216 points higher on our strength rating — 1813 to 1597. Sides with a 160–240-point rating edge at home won 67.0% of 6,587 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 74–16–10.
Why not higher?
No scored evidence points the other way. 74% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 16% and Israel at 10%.
Why is the draw only 16%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 17.1%. These teams' recent games average 4.1 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.9% of 17,245. The goals environment takes 1.5 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Austria (16 fully-tracked matches with us) and Israel (8) carry strength ratings anchored to the official international ratings list, so the class read stands on far more than our own short records. National sides play too few games for a record built from scratch, so their rating chain starts from the published international ratings instead of a blind first guess.
