Berardi strike sees Sassuolo edge Torino in Serie A opener
Sassuolo came from behind at half-time to beat Torino 2-1 in a Serie A round two fixture, moving Alberto Aquilani's side to 12th in the table while Ignazio Abate's Torino remain without a win after two matches. The hosts struck first through Cristian Volpato before Torino levelled right on the stroke of half-time, but a second-half goal proved decisive.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Volpato opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, finishing off an assist from Vasilije Adžić to put Sassuolo ahead. Torino responded in first-half stoppage time when Pietro Comuzzo converted a chance created by Alessio Cacciamani, sending the sides in level at the break at 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the 78th minute when Domenico Berardi netted from a Fedde Leysen assist to restore Sassuolo's lead at 2-1, a scoreline that held to the final whistle. Sassuolo dominated the shot count with 19 attempts to Torino's 10, seven of them on target, despite seeing less of the ball at 46% possession to Torino's 54%.
Volpato and Berardi both finished with a goal apiece and matching 8.2 ratings, with Berardi's late strike ultimately settling the contest for Sassuolo.
Sassuolo managed nearly double Torino's shot tally, firing 19 attempts to the visitors' 10 despite having less of the ball.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Sassuolo 39%, the draw 31%, Torino 30%. It finished Sassuolo 2–1 Torino.
Level sides, home ground swings it, even this early in the season — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Sassuolo's 39% is home ground and little else. The draw at 31% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Sassuolo in front?
Home ground, and little else. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1680 to 1707. Sides this close won 43.2% of 15,833 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.1%).
Why only 39%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Sassuolo's column. Across 10,761 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. Serie A home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to the other outcomes. Serie A homes won 43.3% of 6,092 games vs 44.9% across all 99,457 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Torino win?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,679. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.4 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 6 between them: Sassuolo 1 win, 2 draws, Torino 3 wins. Most recently Torino 2–1 Sassuolo, 4 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 28.1% of 5593 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points.
